Unlike viruses, microorganisms can live independently, and are the source of certain diseases and STIs, such as gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis. There are also bacteria that are essential to our proper functioning, such as those found in the intestinal flora of humans, or in the vaginal flora of women.
