A speculum is a medical instrument used to enlarge (and illuminate) a natural cavity for examination or to insert another instrument. During an examination by a gynecologist, a speculum is sometimes inserted into the vagina to ensure that there are no abnormalities inside the vagina or cervix, and to perform certain tests, such as a Pap smear.
