Refers to people who are born with gendered characteristics that do not correspond to the standard binary definitions of male or female bodies (i.e. inter or intersex people). These gendered characteristics are healthy bodily variations. Intersex can manifest itself at different stages of life, because it goes far beyond the idea that sexual variations are played out in the genitals alone. It represents the letter “I” in the LGBTQIA+ acronym.
